Hey Will. Thanks for the helpful guide! I’ve just gotten into crypto and found this info extremely useful. Just a question regarding how you keep your alt coins safe. As far as I can tell, you can’t keep many of these alt coins on a Trezor hard wallet, so do you just use something like My Ether Wallet instead? Cheers mate! Here’s to a cracking 2018!!
Unlike fiat money, Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies have no central bank that controls them which means that cryptocurrencies can be sent directly from user to user without any credit cards or banks acting as the intermediary. The major advantage of cryptocurrencies is that you can’t print them like central banks do to create fiat money.
Sell crypto for fiat – pay ordinary income tax. When I sell Bitcoin for USD, I am taxed using the FIFO (first in, first out) method of accounting. For example, if I buy BTC with an initial investment of $1,000 and a week sell the BTC for $1800, I’ll pay taxes on the $800 profit.

To help protect your market orders against dramatic price moves, market orders are adjusted to limit orders collared up to 1% for buys, and 5% for sells. Collars are based off the last trade price. This means that your order will not execute if the price of the cryptocurrency moves more than 5% lower than its price at the time you placed a market sell order, or more than 1% higher than its price when you placed a market buy order, until it comes back within the collar.
Bitcoin is easily the most recognized cryptocurrency and is also by far the most highly valued at the moment. However, it’s far from the only digital coin available for trading. There are already dozens of cryptos selling for over USD $1 and even more that go for pennies (though the latter are likely not worth your attention quite yet).
To give an example, in early June 2017, Bitcoin was trading at $2,983, before losing 30% of its value a month later in July—crashing to $1,992. Then it climbed up to $4,764 in September, posting an impressive 139% gain.
This method uses exterior events to read into the future movement of a currency. For example, say a newly published report states that X is a huge problem in 2018 — is there a new cryptocurrency that can solve this issue? If so, it is probably undervalued, and is likely to rise in price. Ka-ching!
You don’t have enough equity to reach your margin minimum. If you have a Gold account, you won’t be able to place a crypto order in your Robinhood Crypto account if doing so would cause you to fall below your margin maintenance or minimum balance in your Gold account. Also, in a Robinhood or Gold account, you cannot place a trade that would cause you to fall below your pattern day trade minimum equity. You can find more information about these scenarios in our article gold buying power.
The digital market is relatively new, so countries and governments are scrambling to bring in cryptocurrency taxes and rules to regulate these new currencies. If you’re not aware of these before you start trading, you may find yourself in a spot of expensive bother further down the line.

The value of NEO started to increase in late 2017 due to its branding as China’s Ethereum, and demand towards NEO from investors in the Asian market, as seen in the chart above. But, in February, the market valuation of NEO started to decline, mostly due to criticisms by such community experts as Eric Wall and Emin Gün Sirer towards NEO’s consensus algorithm.
A cryptocurrency is a fully decentralized, secure, digital currency whose creation is controlled by cryptography. Cryptocurrencies are not issued by central banks and their value does not depend on bank policies. Unlike regular currencies where new money can be introduced in the money supply through Quantitative Easing (QE), cryptocurrency prices are purely based on supply and demand. Bitcoin, created in 2009, was the first cryptocurrency. There currently are over 800 alternative cryptocurrencies, called Altcoins, such as Ethereum, Ripple and Litecoin.
